Mjølner, Mjollnir , Thor's hammer. Its name may mean "The Crusher" or "The Lightning One". It was forged by the dwarfs Brok and Sindre, who, among other things, also forged Frej's Golden Brush and Odin's Draupner. According to Snorre's Edda, its shaft was a little too short, but otherwise it is the finest work the dwarves produced. When Thor throws it out, it always hits, and it always returns - like a boomerang - to his hand.
With the hammer, Thor is first and foremost a demon fighter. He is almost always out slaying giants or fighting the Midgard Serpent. With the hammer he can also "consecrate", i.e. bring his goats back to life after they have been eaten, or bless bridal couples or ship burials. It is conceivable that Mjølner has been a symbol of fertility in ancient times, linked together with Thor's function as god of lightning and thunder.
